Square Enix have posted the sixth part in the series "Eorzea: The Making of a Realm". This part focusses on the art. FFXIV's art director Akihiko Yoshida talks about how the team aimed for a "high fantasy" art style to create a world full of beautiful scenery that you will not get tired of exploring. There is also a bit about the character options and equipment, how they wanted to provide more choice than FFXI.

While we're posting, I'd like to give you an update on the progress of content for FFXIV Info. The class ability lists, the maps and the new races pages are almost complete and this should go online tomorrow. The item/equipment database will then be programmed so that we can easily add items to it as we discover new ones. We'll be using Zam's tool tips to give you the best possible information for items.
