Scholar (SCH) Guide

If you are looking for THE FASTEST WAY to reach the level cap with any class or job within 7 days, this FFXIV Leveling Guide by Killer Guides is a definite must have! It comes with step-by-step leveling tips, quest walkthroughs, detailed primal battle strategies, extensive dungeon guides, and more.

The part of the guide that deals with skill rotations has not yet been updated for Heavensward.

Scholar is a healing job that branches off Arcanist. Its role is to restore the HP of party members that take damage from monsters, cure bad status effects from party members and to revive fallen members of the party upon death. The Scholar can also deal damage with DoTs just like Arcanist and Summoner but this should be seen as secondary to everything else. This guide will talk about how to play the job at level 50 and it should be noted that it may not be the only way to play it. Others may disagree, but see it as a starting point and build on it from there.

Scholar GuideAs a Scholar you should be placing all of your attribute points into Mind (MND) as this increases healing magic potency. Unfortunately SCH shares its attributes with Summoner so it is difficult to play both well, however Cleric Stance from Conjurer will swap your MND and Intelligence (INT) values and give you a 10% boost to magic attack potency so you can use your DPS abilities just fine this way.

With equipment however you could focus on more stats than just MND. Healing Magic Potency is the most important of the rest, with Spell Speed and PIE also being very useful as well. Critical Hit Rate will affect the chances of critical cures so it is worth considering too. Determination will boost the amount of HP restored from your heals.

There are two types of fairies; a healer and a support type. Eos is the healer and Selene is for support. Most of the time you will use Eos to aid with your healing. She also has an ability called Whispering Dawn which gives a regen effect. You should be manually using this ability when it is needed rather than leaving it up to the pet.

Selene is more useful when the Scholar does not need the additional healing from Eos, for example when clearing trash monsters in a dungeon. The spell/skill speed buffs will help out more.

Skill Usage

For a full explanation of skills see our Scholar and Arcanist pages.

As a SCH there is no set skill rotation throughout the battle, it is entirely situational. There is some preparation work that will help you maximise your potential however. Protect should always be on all of your party members and Stoneskin should also be cast between fights.

From here on you should apply the basic healer logic to decide which skill to use when.

Does my tank need healing? Cast Physick
Does my tank have high HP and need healing? Cast Adloquium.
Does my tank have low HP and need a big heal? Cast Lustrate.
Do all of my party members need healing? Cast Succor.
Has a party member died? Cast Resurrect.
Does a party member have a bad status effect? Cast Leeches.

Unlike White Mage it is a lot harder to gain enmity, this is because the enmity your fairies generate go to the fairies rather than the Scholar. This means there is no risk when spamming a cure or using Whispering Dawn early with the fairy. The fairy heals also take away some of the healing you have to do as a SCH which also lowers your enmity generation.

The best way to heal with Scholar is to begin with Adloquium to get the barrier part of the heal up. Since casting this repeatedly will overwrite the barrier it is better to switch to your small cure and only recast Asloquium when the barrier is gone. If the tank's HP has gotten low then you should use Lustrate for a big heal.

While healing is your number one priority, a Scholar is also capable of dealing damage in much the same way as a Summoner. You will not have access Fester but you should be able to apply Bio, Bio II and Miasma as normal and then use Bane to transfer the DoTs to other monsters if need be. Be sure to use Aetherflow whenever the cooldown is up so that you can maximise your big heals.

Sacred Soil is a situational skill which will reduce damage taken to 90% of the attack. This is useful if you know something big is about to happen, for example Titan Tumults or Jump.

Virus is highly beneficial to your tank as it reduces the damage they take, which in turn reduces the amount of HP you need to heal. This is a small amount but it helps.

Try to keep Swiftcast for when you need to Resurrect a party member or a fairy, as you will save a lot of time.

Cross Class Abilities

SCH can take cross class skills from the THM and CNJ classes and at level 50 you can equip up to 5.

The most useful skills you can get from Thaumaturge are Swiftcast (next spell is instant cast) and Surecast (next spell is cast without interruption). Both of these are situational and they may help you get out of some tricky situations.

From Conjurer you should take Protect, Stoneskin and Cleric Stance. Protect and Stoneskin are defensive buffs that will help your party while Cleric Stance will swap your INT and MND values around. Unfortunately this does not help much if you put all of your attributes into INT to play Summoner, but it will boost your DPS if you put all your points into MND. When to use it is when you have time to DPS, such as during Titan heart phase but make sure to turn it off when you're done DPSing.

For two healer parties it may be better to take Aero from Conjurer for DoT damage because if you have a White Mage Protect and Stoneskin are going to be useless. In a party with no White Mage then don't consider this.

The best gear for your Scholar constantly changes depending on what was added in the latest patch so it is important to do your own research on top of this guide. We have broken the gear down into tiers in order to give some indication of what you can use before you get up to that item level tier.

In FFXIV all materia can be added to any slot so this guide only lists the materia that is useful for the Scholar rather than where to put it.

Mind - Increased healing magic potency
Piety - MP
Determination - HP restored by healing magic
Critical Hit Rate - Chance of critical cures.
Quicktongue - Spell Speed

As you will be limited by how much of a certain stat you can apply to gear through stat caps it is a good idea to use a variety and add stats to gear which aren't already on the piece.

First of nice guide, easy to follow.
Second I was wondering about the stats. Do the pet benifit from the stats at all, do they cast quicker when player gains spell speed, will heals be stronger thru mind and determination? etc.

Does my tank need healing? Cast Adloquium.
Does my tank need healing and is Galvanized? Cast Physik
Does my tank have low HP and need a big heal? Cast Lustrate.
Is there a large AoE coming? Cast Soil/Succor.
Do all of my party members need healing? Cast Succor.
Has a party member died? Cast Resurrect.
Does a party member have a bad status effect? Cast Leeches.

Aldo is the go to heal not Physik. It may cost more MP, but is a more lasting heal in combat since the shield component effectively doubles the potency (especially with Crit proc it becomes 4.5x, e.g. a 1000hp heal becomes 4500 before modifiers; 1500hp heal + 3000hp shield)

I just find irksome that so many scholar guides gloss over or unaware of this.
