1UP Previews Final Fantasy XIV, Plus 18 Screenshots

by Xenor

Gaming website 1up have posted their views on the current phase of beta after playing it for a few weeks. There’s a small amount of new information. They have also added some new screenshots, which will be available here and in our screenshot gallery.

As you probably know by now, the beta takes place in and around the starter city of Limsa Lominsa. The article first talks about how good the character creator is and then moves on to the opening cutscene (which is actually in the FFXIV benchmark). We then learn that the starting area outside of Limsa Lominsa is called La Noscea and appears to be around ten times the size of FFXI’s starting areas. The area is filled with a wide variety of monsters, ranging from small rats to massive demon toads.

There is a section on guildleves but there appears to be no new information here. The section on combat and levelling is interesting, especially the following quotes.

“As you thin the La Noscea pest population, your character will accrue skill and experience: skill raises your class rank, earning you new abilities and spells, while experience levels up your character’s “physical level.” Physical level is constant across all classes, regardless of their rank, meaning that as you raise other class ranks, the higher your physical level, the faster a new class will be able to progress.”

“Each time your character reaches a new physical level, they’ll be awarded points to allocate towards stats. A character’s HP and MP are a function of their class rank and physical level, but the player can add points to the six main stats and elemental resistances however they please. Building a warrior? Load up on Strength, Dexterity and Vitality. Building a mage? Load up on Intelligence, Mind and Piety. Don’t worry, though — you can reallocate stats any time you please, if you make a mistake or change classes.”

We hope this will help some of you who may have been confused as to how levelling works. Another thing to note is that while you can use skills and abilities from other classes by equipping them, the system is limited in that some skills and abilities are exclusive to specific classes. This helps prevent a player from just taking the best abilities from every class and putting them into one class.

One more thing to note is that the third phase of the beta will be starting soon and will contain a lot of new features and alterations to current content.

Below are some more screenshots that 1UP posted with their article. As always, clicking on them will give a larger version.
