Combat
The battle system in Final Fantasy XIV will be different to the one in Final Fantasy XI and be closer to the real time battle system used in other MMOs. Apart from this, very little is known about it. What we do know is that solo play will be a lot easier than it was in Final Fantasy XI.

In one of the first interviews at E3 2009 we were told that the game's logo holds some clues as to how the battle system may work. The way each character has their weapons pointed outwards and their backs to each other suggests you will rely heavily on your comrades.

Combat

In Final Fantasy XI most of the combat centred around fighting one monster at a time as this was more efficient. However, early screenshots show many monsters in battles at once and this suggests that could be the norm for the game. Hence relying on comrades to watch your back.

One interesting thing we've recently learnt is that you will be able to draw your weapon in towns. What this means we don't know, but it suggests there may be some instances where monsters can be fought inside towns.

Hi,
Thank you for pointing out this error. You are right and as a result it has been corrected. I don't know how I managed to make that mistake as almost all of the information on this page (at the time of posting this) was taken from the E3 interviews.

In the very first sentence on this combat page you say "The battle system in Final Fantasy XIV has been confirmed to be time based rather than the real time battle system used in Final Fantasy XI" but according to an official interview here: http://ps3.ign.com/dor/objects/823994/square-enix-ps3-mmorpg-untitled/videos/ff14_vdi_060309.html when talking about the combat system he says as clear as day "we believe it will be closer to that real time battle that you see in other MMOs". You might want to change your information accordingly.
