The armoury system in Final Fantasy XIV is the key aspect of character development, and it will determine how you play. Equipping a weapon or tool will give you certain skills and switching to a different one will instantly change your character.
Imagine yourself equipping a sword, doing so will give you the skills of a gladiator. Instantly change this to a staff and you have the skills of a mage. You can even equip a hammer to gain the skills of a blacksmith.
The more time you spend using your weapons and tools, the more skilled you will become in using them and that is how your character develops. There will be a skill cap and your skill level will determine which abilities you can use.
